The Casual Artscast 007

Recorded September 7, 2005 in Weimar Germany:

I just had to record this one even though the Funk Doc ain't around.

Sorry, bro.

Not a whole lot to say about the content of this podcast, except to say that if you find my conclusions at the end to be hinting at racism, then that pretty much proves an implied point of mine that elitism has been built into literacy. The European "intellectual" tradition that was transplanted to the US was not only a means of reproducing knowledge, but was also a way of preserving existing authority. If you think that my description of the development of American art is racist, I would have to say that's because you don't yet recognize the value of fluency in other media (song, image, or the spoken word, for example), and you might need to examine your own literate bias.

But then I also believe that (with few exceptions) all Americans are racist due to their socialization and media environment...maybe there'll be a future podcast on that little potato.

Onto the show-

This was the first recording of The Casual Artscast in my adopted home town and the birthplace of The Casual Arts radio show on bauhaus fm: Weimar, Germany. A sweet little town in the former East Germany which has always been small but disproportionately significant in German history.

After listening to the most recent Vox Monitor and drawing upon some points made by Bazooka Joe from the Small World podcast, I just had to grab the minidisc recorder and fire off another show.

The next Artscast wasn't scheduled to be released quite yet, but as I mentioned in the show, it's the flexibility of podcasting that makes it such a valuable and powerful medium.

Ausserplanmässig - Not according to plan; unscheduled

The clock tower and city park, Weimar

My street. Please don't drop by unannounced.

Turned out to be a shorter show than usual, but I expect that's cause the Funk Doc wasn't there.

I hope my points were clear but if not, well, that's another beautiful thing about podcasting: if it didn't make sense or you disagree, we can easily get in touch through various available channels - specifically email (see below) or Skype (ID: jmvelos)

Let me know what you think.

The music was certainly varied. I played "Autumn Leaves" from Somethin' Else (Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis et al). The second track was A toccata from Bach played by Glenn Gould (and you can hear him singing in this one), and the final track was called "Freestyle Joint" by the good men from A Tribe Called Quest.

Expect another Artscast by the beginning of October.
